Is the detail in the classic stainless steel metal business cards infilled with paint?

No, when you etch away the surface you reveal the core metal colour, which is an off white colour.

Can you infill with paint?

Yes, we can etch your design and then either infill black using our automated process or a colour of your choice by hand.

How is the colour print applied?

This uses a process of electrophoretic deposition, mainly applying a lacquered coating and dyeing the colour to suit.

Are there any restrictions to the colour we choose?

Yes, the colour is on stainless steel so will not be an exact pantone match. It is also not possible to print white.

Metal thickness, why would I choose one thickness over another?

The thicker the metal is, the stiffer the card will be. Many feel that a thicker card can represent more of a luxury / high end feeling product. However, our thicker metal cards are also heavier and so the thicker card types are usually used for membership cards rather than business cards. If you would like surface etch detail on both sides of the card but there is surface etched detail on one side of the card which positionally clashes with surface etched detail on the reverse side of the card, then choosing the thicker card makes this type of design style possible. However, the depth of the surface etch is very shallow on both sides. The picture below represents a card, where the detail on both sides were etched too deep, and unwanted holes were created.

How are the cards actually made?

The metal cards are manufactured through chemical etching. This is a process which allows fine detail to be etched both into the surface and through the metal. This is a wet process so will not leave any sharp burrs on the edge of the parts, whilst being incredibly accurate and versatile for your designs.
